Statement by MTM on the conflict between EPAL and UIC

EPAL (European Pallet Association) and UIC (International Union of Railways) have been engaged in a long-term conflict to the detriment of EUR pallet pool participants.

At the beginning of March 2017, EPAL published a message recommending the exclusive use and exchange of EPAL euro pallets from May 1, 2017 and the non-acceptance of any UIC pallets produced after March 1, 2017. Shortly afterwards, major Swiss transport and trading companies as well as industry associations met to discuss the topic. Migros and the other companies do not accept this recommendation. Therefore, GS1 Switzerland, ASTAG and IG DHS asked the conflicting parties in writing to effectively resolve their differences and to cease their battle at the expense of the users financing the pool.

The Migros pallet exchange will remain unchanged. Like many other companies, Migros will not implement EPAL's recommendation. This means that both EPAL and UIC pallets will continue to be used at the Migros ramps. Accordingly, pallet collectors will receive pallets from EPAL and UIC. It is not possible to obtain solely EPAL pallets from Migros.

MTM will keep you informed about further developments via our homepage.
